I’ve just planted 6 pots of red geraniums and am in full summer mode. Here are some of my favorite things in the stores right now.
ALC watercolor print skirt: I want to sashay through the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens wearing this. It’s rose season, so I imagine looking quite the vision as I view the latest blooms there.
Pachacuti Panama fedora: forget the stingy brim fedoras, this Panama hat is the ultimate. And if you love to wear “Cancun Cowboy” hats, well then, no comment.
Etro printed silk-twill pants: Gosh I love these pants. These would be my summer evening pants, lounging around with flat sandals and a white tank.
Isabel Marant linen jacket: This is the kind of jacket that works for spring, summer, and fall. Super versatile, this jacket is your friend.
Marni cami and shorts: Why do I need Marni pajamas? Because, I’m not sure why, but I think I’d feel like Brigitte Bardot when wearing them. And I might be able to get away with watering the garden in them too.
I’ve been spending lots of time in the stores lately and I like what I see! Here are a few of my favorite items available right now. Click on photos for shopping info:
Rag & Bone zig zag sweater. This is a summer sweater, made out of cotton ribbon. It’s perfect for those chilly early mornings and evenings when you need an extra layer. It feels amazing and I adore it.
And this Marc by Marc Jacobs bag looks a bit like a Celine bag, but is way less expensive:
These Rag & Bone cut-out brogues make the perfect “borrowed from the boys” statement:
Do you need red pants? If they are Isabel Marant you do! I would wear these with flats or sneakers for day, and heels and a cami at night. Super versatile, and the color makes them special:
And lastly, a gorgeous link with pave bracelet from the very talented Eddie Borgo. I bet the next move for him is teaming up with a fine jewelry brand to create luxury, tough pieces that we can all drool over…
I am feeling like I am 110 years old today! I have been working on a crazy busy catalog job that makes me think there should be an olympic sport called “Super Styling”. (It should come right after rhythmic gymnastics. Ha!) So now I am sitting here with my laptop, sandwiched between two snoring pups, dreaming of my chiropractor appointment tomorrow morning. I love discovering new artists, (or new to me I should say), and I’m thrilled to show you a painting by Will Fowler.
Will Fowler is a Los Angeles based painter who was born in 1969. His non representational canvases reference early Modernists like Dubuffet, Miro, and Pollock and sometimes take years to complete. He works in acrylic, and layers shapes upon colorful shapes until they become a mesmerizing, energetic, frenzy-filled composition.
I find them to be quite beautiful, and I wondered how much recognition he had been getting lately. I searched around and read on Bloomberg.com that during the Armory show this year, his dealer sold 13 paintings in under two hours at $7,000 each. Not bad!
this painting is called “Bathtub”. (Click on the photo to see it bigger)
I am crazy about the Tim Binns earrings. I chatted with him on the phone many years ago when I was calling in jewelry for an InStyle Magazine cover featuring Sheryl Crow. He said in a very nice English accent: ”I suppose I should lend you jewelry for it, but you know, I don’t really like Sheryl Crow.” I laughed, as it was refreshing to hear someone be so honest, when most designers would kill to get their stuff on a celebrity.
Today I am featuring the very talented painter Michael Borremans. He is from Belgium and was born in 1963. Originally trained as a photographer, he turned to drawing and painting in his mid thirties. This is kind of wild to me since he is a really good painter, so he must have had a natural gift to have picked it up so late.
He is influenced by the styles of Manet and Degas, and Velazquez, and he uses photographs he has taken himself as reference for his paintings. He also commissions sculptures of the human figure which he then paints from. His paintings are seemingly quiet and contemplative, but they really hit you over the head with their air of restraint and strong views about society. Here are a few of his paintings. The woman with the bees is called “American Actress”, I wonder what he means by this?
This very masterful painting is called “Automat”. His light and detail are really stunning.
Here is my outfit inspired by this painting. I am crazy about the Michael Kors cork wedges…
Tis the season for holiday parties, and it’s time to figure out what to wear from now through New Year’s Eve. I have two Christmas parties to attend so far, and I am going to Boston for NYE, where my husband’s band Soulive will be performing. I had so much fun looking at holiday clothes online that I am sharing some of my favorites. Click on photos for shopping info.
First up is an adorable Isabel Marant cocktail dress. It’s sexy, but the sideways ruching is really slimming.
These Louboutin’s are so perfect and lovely I could stare at them all day long:
if you are looking to wear a LBD during the holidays, any one of these necklaces will be a perfect addition:
I have always wanted a black feather skirt. It’s fun and festive, and if paired with a striped t-shirt and a blazer it satisfies my tomboy side. This one from Adam has a cool chain waistband.
Lastly, here is my perfect NYE outfit. I like to wear flats, because who wants painful feet when ringing in the New Year?
I know a festive coat would come in handy at this time of year, so here is my ultimate: A silk flower and stud embellishment coat by Phillip Lim. This coat will also come in handy this spring when white is real dominant for the season:
So lace is big for fall, yes I know…Maybe it’s because I worked at InStyle Weddings for so long, but I have a hard time with lace in the “real world”. Gorgeous Alencon or Chantilly lace on a wedding gown? Maybe… Lace on my top for da club? No thanks….
However, I have decided to challenge myself and make lace my own. Gone (I hope) is the girly “Little House on the Prairie” vibe, and here is a tougher, more casual look.
Here is another outfit I put together with a Lover black lace blouse. I added the army pants to rough it up a bit, and now I could definitely see myself wearing this look.
The Michael Kors booties are fantastic, but these Dolce Vita heels have a similar feel and are $100.
Lastly, I have included a few more lace items that I could see myself wearing this fall. Note that they mostly are all black. Except for that Marc by Marc ivory dress, I can really only deal with black lace, or maybe gray.
British artist David Hockney was born in 1937, (he’s born under the sign of Cancer like me!) and was the fourth of five children growing up in Yorkshire. He travelled to Los Angeles for the first time in 1964, and began the first of a series of swimming pool paintings, which are some of my favorites .
This painting is called “A Bigger Splash” and was painted in 1967. I have always loved David Hockney’s work. There is something about a Brit exploring the California sunshine in the 60′s and 70′s, and his work perfectly mixes abstract shapes and lines with architecture and interiors and figures. He is very influenced by Picasso, and throughout his career you can see how much he loves and is inspired by him (as well as Van Gogh and Ingres). If you want to view more of his work and read a very comprehensive biography, check out his website here.
Here is my outfit inspired by this painting. It makes me want to go to a party at this modern house and jump in the pool after a few glasses of champagne.
J’adore the Lanvin bag, but this Halston Heritage bag is fantastic and is way less expensive at $295
Here is a short video of David Hockney answering questions that Tate Museum followers posted on Twitter. He talks a bit about “A Bigger Splash” which is insightful.
And here is part 1 of an interesting conversation between David Hockney and Charlie Rose about the camera obscura and other optical devices used by the old masters.
I am finishing up my fall wish list with a few more important items. Let me know what your big ticket items will be for fall, I’d love to know what you are dreaming about to add to your wardrobe.

Since I love to wear black, I have picked out these YSL platform pumps to add a shock of color to my sometimes colorless wardrobe.
I’m pretty crazy about this Rick Owens alpaca-silk oversized cardigan. It’s soft and very cool looking, just like everything that Rick designs. It’s definitely an investment, but it will be worn for years to come.
It’s nice to have a smaller bag when you don’t need to carry the kitchen sink with you, and this Rebecca Minkoff bag reminds me a little of that covetable Celine bag that is so hot right now.
I took this photo off of the Celine website. Who knows how much this baby costs:
I need this Bottega Veneta scarab ring, it’s so whimsical, and I love bugs (that don’t bite).
I love this 3.1 Phillip Lim cashmere double sleeved sweater. The double sleeves are a nice detail, and there’s nothing like cashmere, right?
Lastly, I have to add these Isabel Marant suede cropped pants. Leather is a big trend for fall, and these pants have that “je ne sais quoi” cool that Isabel Marant always brings to her designs. I know I would wear these every day, like a favorite pair of jeans. I also like the fact that they have some stretch to them.
I hope you enjoyed my foray into fall 2010 clothing, and don’t forget to let me know what you are looking for this fall!
Here are the Wilson sisters of the band Heart…these girls really rocked it out..Ann and Nancy Wilson grew up in Seattle, Washington (where I was born!) and gained popularity in the 1970′s. Here they are as young women on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine:
Ann gained a bit of weight eventually, but her voice is so cool, who cares?
These babes really love their makeup!
They are releasing their first new album in awhile this July, so look for it. It will be called “Red Velvet Car”. And expect tour dates as well.
Here they are in 1977 performing “Barracuda”
Here is my outfit inspired by Heart. I am crazy about the Isabel Marant boots.
