It’s my birthday today! Soulive, (the band my husband is in), is playing at 5pm at the Fort Greene Park, so we will be there celebrating. Next up in my painting and outfit series is Jakub Julian Ziolkowski. He is a very intriguing, and interesting young artist. It is said that while he was attending a prestigious art school in Poland that he failed to show up for awhile, choosing instead to paint in solitude at home. When he finally returned, his teachers were furious but could not deny the quality of the 40 paintings he had made while at home. He was then given special permission to paint where he wanted. He is a loner with a very active imagination. He doesn’t use source materials like photos to come up with his images. Instead he draws from his own brain, coming up with a cast of characters and other world places. You can view more of his work here. There is also a great article about him in the July issue of W magazine, the one with Eva Mendes on the cover. Have a great weekend!
Here is my safari inspired outfit inspired by Julian’s painting:
Day 2 dedicated to the the fantastic style of the Coachella festival goers. Here we have a cute little outfit that I would wear in a second! I love the Giles & Brother leather wrap bracelet with the hook, such a great piece to wear all summer long and dream of the Greek Isles. I also love the uber cool Cynthia Vincent cutout booties, and the Banana Republic bag is really reasonable at $198.
I so adored Bananarama when I was growing up. They were so much fun to dance to, and I only recently found out that this British trio holds the Guinness book of World Records as the only all-female group to have the most chart entries in history. I am assuming that reunion tours aside, they made some serious loot off all their hits. The group was founded in 1979 by 3 lifelong friends Siobhan Fahey, Keren Woodward, and Sara Dallin, with their greatest success happening during the period of 1982-89.
Here is my outfit inspired by these fantastic girls. I love the floral Doc Martins!
Next up is painter British painter Glenn Brown. Glenn is an appropriationist, meaning he uses other’s work as a starting point for his own. Here he has used Frank Aurbach’s richly textured portraits and translated them into works that appear textured, but the surface is actually smooth as glass. On the left is Frank Aurbach’s work, and the right is Glenn Brown’s:
In this painting, Glenn has used a Rembrandt painting which I believe is of his wife Saskia. Rembrandt’s is on the left, Glenn’s is on the right:
Here is my outfit inspired by Glenn Browns “Untitled” after Rembrandt’s painting. I love the Tibi suede jacket. I think it’s a good investment piece, and something I’d wear all the time.
Since the girl who wears this outfit is not afraid of color, Carmindy suggests pairing a deep red lipstick with it. This one from Estee Lauder is lovely.
I woke up last weekend with a sore throat. I bundled up on the couch with a hot tea and my lap top and put in “The Royal Tenenbaums”. This led me to want to make an outfit inspired by Margot Tenenbaum (played dryly by a lovely Gwyneth Paltrow).
Then I started looking at bags…so I made a page of a few cute ones.
Then I watched “Gosford Park”, and had another cup of tea and some oregano oil, which promptly made me smell like a pizza. Happy weekend to all….
Ah Billie Holiday…When it rains I always want to listen to Billie and her sultry melancholy voice. I once heard someone slow down a Billie Holiday track and what happened was really wild: She sounded JUST LIKE Louis Armstrong, I swear. Try it if you have some vinyl and some time to kill.
I love that she always wore fragrant gardenias in her hair:
